  • How can I save on my electricity bill in Fort Worth?

How much you pay on your electricity bill is tied to two factors: your price per kilowatt-hour (kWh) and your consumption. The first way you can try to save is by shopping around for other electricity plans that offer a lower cost per kWh. Switching electricity companies is typically a straightforward process, but you may need to pay an early termination fee if you change more than 14 days before the end of your contract.

If you can’t switch plans now, the other way to lower your electricity bill is by limiting how much you use. Fort Worth’s summers are long and hot, and Cowtown is no stranger to freezing winter weather; mitigating how much electricity you use during these two seasons can help lower your costs. Here’s how:

Get your air conditioning and heater serviced before summer and winter, respectively. Not only will this ensure that they are working efficiently, but you may also be able to catch issues before they happen.

Change your air filter once every 90 days or sooner, especially if you have pets. Clogged air filters make your air conditioner work harder; replacing them regularly can lower your unit’s energy consumption by up to 15 percent.

In the summer, keep your air conditioner set to 78 degrees. This is the magic number that balances personal comfort and energy savings, according to the Public Utilities Commission of Texas (PUCT). Each degree lower than 78 increases electricity use by six to eight percent. When winter arrives, setting your heater to 68 degrees can help you save as well.

Set ceiling fans to run counterclockwise in the summer and clockwise in the winter, which will help circulate warm air through the room.

Keep your window curtains closed during the summer to prevent the sun from warming your home. Do the opposite in the winter to take advantage of the solar heating.

Unplug all appliances and turn off lights and ceiling fans when you leave a room.

Check the weather stripping on your windows and doors to prevent air leaks.

Replace all incandescent lights with LEDs, which are about 75 percent more energy efficient and can last up to 25 times longer.

  • Is Fort Worth part of Texas’ deregulated energy market?

Fort Worth, much of North Texas and about 85 percent of the Lone Star State are part of Texas’ deregulated energy market. This gives you the ability to choose the right plan offered by one of the many electricity companies in Fort Worth. Fort Worth was among the many cities that joined the deregulated market when it first opened in 2002. Since then, electricity consumers there have had access to a host of electricity companies and their often-complicated plans. Finding the right electricity plan for your home shouldn’t be hard, which is why we keep our options as straightforward as it gets.

  • Who provides electricity in Fort Worth?

While there are many electricity companies in Fort Worth, there is only one electricity provider: Oncor. As the Transmission and Distribution Utility (TDU) for Fort Worth and throughout North Texas, Oncor is responsible for ensuring electricity is transmitted reliably from the point of generation to your home. This includes maintaining power lines and measuring the amount of electricity your home uses. Since Oncor is your TDU, they are who you should reach out to if you have a power outage or if you need to report downed power lines.
